Port Oliver Recreation Area opens April 1 with fishing pier, ramps and amphitheatre

Wow! is the best way to describe the newly-completed Port Oliver Recreation Area, next to the Barren River Dam. It offers a variety of accommodations for visitors, including two picnic shelters, a playground, a fishing pier, a four-wide boat ramp, an amphitheatre, and three bathrooms. It is scheduled to open April 1, 2011.
Visitors got a “sneak peek” at the new area Saturday during an Open House from 1-3 p.m. Here are some photos. More may be seen at Photos in the slideshow.

How can a person reserve this area for a family event? We are planning 2 events for June and July and this would be the perfect place. Any help is greatly appreciated.

      I appreciate your question.
Kevin Salvilla of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said that the pavilion at Port Oliver is available on a first come first serve basis.
Pavilion’s at the Narrows, Tailwater, Bailey’s Point, and Quarry Road day use areas can be reserved by calling 270-646-2055.
If you have any more questions that I can help you with please ask.

  3. Craig says:

Will the Port Oliver Recreation Area be open to the public year round or will the entrance road be closed during the fall/winter?

    • Clay says:

Yes, the Port Oliver Recreation Area will be open year round, as will all of the park’s picnic areas, playground and boat ramp. Thanks for asking, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. If I don’t know the answer, I will find someone that does.

i had a few questions, what do you mean by first come first serve? I would love to use this for my wedding/reception,could i set everything up with signs an come back closer to time or does someone actually have to be physically there? Also, if someone was willing to make a donation, could they reserve it that way? also, is there someone i could call an talk to about makin sure what is allowed and not? thanks so much!!!

    • Shawnie,
Good questions, and, while I do not have the answers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the lake does. You can reach them by calling 270-646-2055. Or you can drop by their office next to the dam. The Lead Park Ranger is Carlos Lopez. And, tell them that BarrenRiverblog.com sent you. 🙂
