Federal official to participate in eco-meet at Barren River Lake Tailwater on June 16

The Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, Jo-Ellen Darcy, will participate with area youth in an eco-meet at the Barren River Lake Tailwater Recreation Area Thursday, June 16, from 2-4 p.m.
About 75 youth from Barren and Allen counties’ 4H, Allen County’s YMCA, as well as other groups, will visit stations at the Tailwater Recreation Area to learn about local plants and animals, water safety and environmental stewardship.
The final activity will be a fishing derby hosted by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
Darcy’s official responsibilities include programs for conservation and development of the nation’s water and wetland resources and she is a key supporter of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) initiative.
One of the goals of AGO is to reconnect Americans, especially children, to this country’s natural environment.
President Obama launched the America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) initiative in April, 2010 to develop a 21st century conservation and recreation agenda.
The goals of the initiative are:
   • Reconnect Americans, especially children, to America’s great outdoors.
   • Partner with public and private agencies, organizations and tribal groups
to restore, conserve and promote America’s great outdoors.
   • Use science-based management practices to restore and protect our
lands and waters for future generations.
