With Barren River Lake beaches open, swim with caution and common sense

Quarry Road Beach

With the Quarry Road, Beaver Creek and the campground beaches on Barren River Lake open, swimmers should enter the water with caution and common sense to prevent injury and drowning.
Here are some swimming tips from the American Red Cross:
– Swim in designated areas only.
– Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.
– Never leave children unattended around the water.
– Always be within an arm’s length of children in the water.
– Have children or inexperienced swimmers wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
– If a child is missing check the water first; seconds count.
– Establish rules for your family and enforce them without fail.
– Be cautious around water, a accidental fall into water can be fatal.
– If you go boating, wear a life jacket!
– Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination.
– Call 911 in an emergency. (911 services are available at Barren River Lake.)
– Learn first aid and CPR.
