Friends of Barren River Lake and Park announce upcoming events, fundraisers

   Friends of Barren River Lake and Park announced upcoming events and fundraisers for 2012, during a public meeting at the Barren River Lake State Park Lodge last night.
   The Friends is a not-for-profit volunteer organization. Its mission is “to support education and communication to enhance recreation, safety, conservation, and stewardship of Barren River Lake public lands,” according to its brochure.

   Among activities that it sponsored in 2011, were the 24th annual Trashmasters Classic, a variety of safety programs, the annual July 4 fireworks at the Barren River Lake State Park, and habitat awareness programs.
The Friends’ 2012 activities and fundraisers will be:
– St. Patrick’s Day Dance (at the state park), March 17;
– Poker Run, June 9;
– Fireworks, July 4 (at the state park);
– Poker Run, August (no date set);
– 25th annual Trashmasters Classic, Sept. 15.
   Also during the meeting, Friends were provided information about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ activities in relation to the Barren River Lake by head park ranger Carlos Lopez.
   Lisa Davis, Barren River Lake State Parkmanager, also talked about the park and its relation to the lake.

   Before adjourning, Army Corps of Engineers ranger Alan Ramey gave a water safety demonstration on boating safety.

   Annual memberships are $10 for single person and $50 for family. Lifetime memberships are $150 for single/family.
   Volunteers are always needed to help with the many projects.
