Barren River Lake State Park will host the 6-hour Unbridled Adventure Race Aug. 11

   Barren River Lake State Park will host one of the four adventure races in the 2012 Unbridled Adventure Race Series.
   The six-hour (that is correct, 6 hours) adventure race is Saturday, Aug. 11, starting at 10 a.m.
   The race will include mountain biking on trail and road, trekking on and off trail, paddling on flat or slow-moving water, and navigation with a topographic map and compass.
   All participants are strongly encouraged to have a basic familiarity with a topographic map and the physical fitness to trek 5 miles, bike 15 miles, and paddle 2 miles, according to the race organizer, Flying Squirrel Adventures.
   Race check-in on Saturday will be from 7-9 a.m., and a pre-race briefing at 9 a.m.
   The race finish is scheduled for 4 p.m., with awards at 5 p.m.
   There will be a free navigation clinic on Friday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m., at the Harp Shelter.
   Participants are also invited to a Greet and Eat at the Driftwood Restaurant in the park’s Louie B. Nunn Lodge from 5:30-7 p.m., Friday.
   Registration fee is $90 per racer (with boat, paddle and life jacket included).
   Registration deadline is Saturday, July 28.

   Your entry for each race includes a wicking race shirt, post-race meal, quality waterproof maps, event insurance with medical coverage, course vetting, Tyvek control cards and race bibs, door prizes, and awards.

      Races are open to individuals or teams of two, three or four people.
      Winners of individual races will receive prizes. Overall series (4 races) top finishers will receive cash awards.
   All races are USARA-sanctioned and qualify for points in the USARA national standings.
   Additionally, Unbridled Adventure is a series that qualifies for additional points under the new UARA points guidelines.
   This series, of which the Barren River Lake State Park race is one, is being conducted at Kentucky State Parks, in partnership with the Kentucky Office of Adventure Tourism and Flying Squirrel Adventures.
   The first Unbridled Adventure Race was June 9 at General Butler State Resort Park.
   The remaining races are:
– Aug. 11, Barren River State Park, 6-hour race.
– Sept. 15, Carter Caves State Resort Park, 8-hour race.
– Nov. 3, Natural Bridge State Resort Park, 12-hour race. (NOT recommended for inexperienced racers.)
   Registration for all races is two weeks prior to the race and may be completed at Race Registrations.
