Barren River Lake State Park beach will not open in 2012 due to low lake level

The Barren River Lake State Park beach will NOT open this year due to low lake levels.
State park manager Lisa Davis said that with only about one month left in the season, that lake levels are inadequate to open the beach this year. She also said that even if the lake did reach summer pool, maintenance and sand replacement would not be feasible so late in the season.
This is the third year in a row that the state park beach has not been open. The previous two years due to high lake levels and this year due to low lake levels.
The lake level must be at summer pool (552 ft.) for the beach to open. As of today, July 30, the lake level stands at 549 ft. This year’s drought has not allowed the lake to reach its summer pool.
The beach annually opens Memorial Day weekend and closes Labor Day weekend.
