Barren River Lake Fishing Report

By Josh Morris

Josh Morris hooked this one on Barren River Lake last week.

Don’t let the cooler weather from Blackberry Winter keep you off Barren River Lake. We hit the water post frontal blue bird sky’s not expecting to do very good.  While I didn’t catch anything very big I sure had fun figuring them out.
I had something happen I do not think that has happened to me while bass fishing.  I laid the boat down, dropped the trolling motor, hooked my Brush Hog, made my first cast and thump! I caught one on the first cast.  I do not recall doing this before, if I have its few and far between. It was 30 minutes before my next bite. But I did figure out two patterns that produced for me.

Bass brush hogs in a green pumpkin or some variation of that on the back banks of pockets.  These fish, I think are males moving out from guarding fry.  There was a ton of fry up in the pockets but no bass that I could see, or catch.
The second deal I found was bluffs. These fish were better fish.  I caught these fish on a shaky head. The fish in the pockets were 3 to 5 feet deep.  On the wall was 5 to 12 feet deep.

Easton Frazier, a member of the Barren County High School Fishing Team, caught these on Barren River Lake.

Crappie are more scattered now and hard to pin point.  Fishing wood cover in 8 feet of water would be a good place to start.

Blue Gill
will spawn very soon get some crickets and fill the boat with these tasty guys.

Catfish
are still active on the bluffs and rip raff.  Popeye jigs crickets and floaters are a fun option.

Carp
are spawning like mad for all you bowfishermen go get some!

Guys I hope you all have a great week and weekend.  We appreciate any photos you can send in!
Good luck and God Bless!
